Mamoun Hmidan, Chief Business Officer at Wego, shares how the travel marketplace introduced stablecoin payments through its partnership with Triple-A, the benefits for online merchants and travelers, and the lessons learned from integrating a new digital payment option.
Wego is the largest online travel marketplace in the MENA region, helping millions of travellers discover, compare and book flights, hotels, and travel experiences. We operate across the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia Pacific, connecting travellers with hundreds of airlines, hotels, and travel partners through a seamless digital platform.
As a global travel marketplace, payments are a critical part of the customer journey. Our users are digitally connected travellers who expect a fast, secure, and flexible checkout experience, regardless of where they are booking from or how they choose to pay. As payment preferences continue to evolve, our focus is on ensuring the booking experience evolves with them.
At Wego, we see payments as an important part of the overall travel experience. Travelers increasingly expect flexibility not only in where they travel, but also in how they pay.
Our partnership with Triple-A reflects our commitment to expanding payment choice while maintaining a seamless and secure booking experience. As digital payments continue to evolve, we believe it's important to support emerging payment methods that meet the needs of a growing segment of global consumers.
Travel is one of the most international industries, and giving customers greater flexibility at checkout is a natural evolution of our platform. Stablecoins complement our existing payment ecosystem by offering an additional option for travellers who prefer to transact using digital assets.
Introducing a new payment method is about much more than adding another checkout option. It requires careful consideration of security, regulatory compliance, settlement processes, and, most importantly, the customer experience.
Working with Triple-A allowed us to integrate stablecoin payments through an established and regulated infrastructure, enabling us to introduce this capability while maintaining the same simple and secure booking journey our customers expect.
One of the key lessons is that successful payment innovation should feel effortless to the customer. The technology may be sophisticated, but the checkout experience should remain familiar, intuitive, and reliable.
It's still early, and we're approaching the rollout as a long-term investment in payment innovation rather than focusing on short-term adoption.
What we're seeing is growing interest from customers who value having greater flexibility in how they pay. More broadly, it reflects an industry-wide shift where consumers increasingly expect merchants to support a wider range of digital payment options.
As awareness of digital assets continues to grow, we expect adoption to increase gradually alongside broader developments in the payment’s ecosystem and regulatory landscape.
One of the biggest lessons is that innovation works best when it expands customer choice rather than replacing existing behaviours.
We see stablecoins as complementing traditional payment methods, not competing with them. Cards, digital wallets, and bank transfers continue to play an important role, and stablecoins simply provide another option for customers who prefer to transact that way.
For merchants considering a similar initiative, our advice would be to focus on three things: choosing experienced partners, ensuring compliance from the outset, and designing the integration around the customer experience. New payment methods should make the checkout journey simpler and more flexible, not more complicated.
We believe stablecoins will become an increasingly important part of the broader digital payments ecosystem as infrastructure matures, regulatory frameworks continue to develop, and consumer confidence grows.
Travel is inherently global, making it one of the industries where more efficient cross-border payments have the potential to create meaningful value for both consumers and merchants. While it's still early, we see digital assets becoming another recognised payment option alongside cards, digital wallets, and other alternative payment methods.
Ultimately, we don't see this as a question of one payment method replacing another. The future of payments is about offering customers more choice, greater flexibility and a seamless checkout experience, regardless of how they choose to pay. At Wego, our role is to continue evolving with customer expectations while making travel booking as simple and convenient as possible.
